Twas the night before Christmas

...and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a Pit Bull :)

Wait wait wait. Spuds and Shadow heer. I know mama duznt let us type this bloggie very often, but we wanna show u wuts going on in the house. We are definitely stirring.

See...we found deez presents under da inside toilet tree, and we fink dey have r names on dem. Butt...mama and daddy wont let us chew dem up yet! Duz anyone no why?


 
I thought maybe Santa had to come first before we could open dem. Becuz, you no, we met him and it seemed like he wuz the one supposed to bring presents, from da conversashun we had wif him and all. I watched for him out da window, see? All I saw was snow. Hmpf.
 
 
We are also a little sooprised to see presnts under da tree, becyz Santa told us he doesnt come til veeery layte on Christmas Eve, and it is not veeery layte yet. Butt, based on wut we saw, these presents are just from mama and daddy anywayz.
 
I guess we'll be snuggling next to the tree, waiting fur morning. We sure r excited about opening r presents.

Ok, wee are signing off now. R paws r tired from all this typing. We shoulda let mama do it.

Christmas is Coming and iPhone blogging troubles

Hi everyfurry!! Christmas will be here before we know it. The dogs have been getting lots of Christmas cards from everyone in the card exchange. We have ours all ready to be mailed out tomorrow. The dogs have gotten more Christmas cards that Chad and I, hehe.

Shadow has been adapting to having a Christmas tree in the window. She still manages to get her window-gazing in, even with the big tree in the way.

She is sporting her new "piggy" sweater (Or Miss Piggy, as we refer to her) in this pic. It is from Chilly Dog sweaters, and it is the first clothing item she has ever liked. I'm pretty sure she is tired of being chilly in the winter. She seems happier, cuddlier, and calmer with this sweater on.

 
The Pooches would also like you to know that they met the "Big man" last week. They met.....

There was a local pet food store doing photos with Santa, and the profits benefited a local animal shelter. Spuds and Shadow did SO great in the store. They were friendly to everyone, seemed very comfortable in the unfamiliar environment, and also were so nice to Santa. I wasn't sure what to expect, because sometimes Spuds can be a little put-off by people wearing hats. Also, Shadow doesn't always warm up to people right away. She, however, greeted everyone in the store with a lick, hug, and tail wag. I was really amazed at how open they were to the whole experience. Talk about a "proud mother" moment! I'm pretty sure they enjoyed just being in the store more than actually getting their picture taken with Santa, but it seemed like they had fun overall!

On a human-related note, my Blogger app on my iPhone says I'm at my photo limit and won't let me do posts to Blogger through the app anymore, so I can only do them on my laptop. Has anyone else ran into this problem? If so, how did you resolve it? I thought about deleting some of the posts that are saved into the app to make more memory space, but I'm pretty sure if I delete them from the list of posts on the app, they'll disappear from the blog. I'm not sure why it says I'm at my photo limit on the app, but is still letting me post from the laptop...

Happy Holidays

Shadow wishes everyone a happy holiday season!
 
We just finished decorating the tree, and I found her jingle bell collar. She was excited to prance around in it (probably because she anticipated treats?) Shadow has also enjoyed laying under the tree on the tree skirt. She's always the first one to try out laying on something new.
Spuds did his traditional "I must walk underneath the tree a million times on day 1 that it's up." Ever since he was a puppy, he has treated Christmas trees as a prop for playing, and loves to walk, slide, run, etc underneath them. Surprisingly, he hasn't broken many ornaments in his 8 years.

Veg of the Week

 

...Tofu!

I was craving tofu,noodles, and sesame oil the other night. I ended up with something yummy andvegan. I made a pasta dish, including gluten free noodles, tofu browned in afrying pan, a few oils and seasonings, and fresh veggies. If you are cravingAsian- inspired comfort food that is still somewhat healthy...here's what youdo!

You will need onepackage of firm or extra firm tofu. Use half of the package and press it to getthe extra moisture out. Don't know how to do that? Just wrap the tofu inseveral paper towels to soak up the moisture, set it on a plate, and stack abunch of heavy books on top of the tofu for a few minutes to press all thatmoisture out. It will cook much nicer and have a good texture to it.

While you are doingthat, start your pot of water for noodles.

I used a cast ironpan, because... they are awesome! This is a fairly new discovery for me, soI've been cooking everything on cast iron. Put a small amount of olive oil (Iused the spray bottle version) on the pan, and also cover the pan with about1/2 -1 tsp sesame oil. Set you heat to medium and throw in some chopped freshveggies of your choice. I had a red jalapeno, an orange banana pepper, and ared bell pepper on hand, so that's what I used. Mushrooms are a great option toadd in.

Once your tofu hassat under the heavy books for a few, unwrap the tofu from the paper towel. Cutit into bite size strips and add to the pan with your veggies. It will brownnicely with the oil in the pan. I sometimes have to add a little extra oil soit doesn't stick to the pan.

When your waterstarts to boil, throw in about 3/4cup of gluten free noodles and followdirections for boiling on your noodles' container.

While everything is cooking, prepare the bowl you will eat this in. Add some splashes of soy sauce, sesame oil, a tsp of vegan butter, sriracha hot sauce, garlic, crushed red pepper, nutritional yeast, and anything else you may like, to taste. You can see a rough estimate of how much I added, here. Not too much really...just enough to barely cover the bottom of the bowl.
 
 
Then, prepare your strainer by putting a small handful of spinach in it. When your noodles are ready, pour them in the strainer with the spinach in it, to wilt to spinach.
 

 
When your tofu is browned, your noodles are al dente, and your bowl is prepped, throw everything in the bowl and stir.
 
This literally takes less than a half hour!!

Veg of the Week

...Good advice.

I'm not actually blogging about a specific food or recipe this week. Instead, I want to share some advice I've heard throughout the week relating to food, weight, attitude, etc.

In keeping up with the "healthy habits" and training for the half marathon (which is October 21st...eek!) I've been listening to some Jillian Michael's podcasts. I've heard some advice on these podcasts that are worth sharing.

Before I share them, I want to preface them with the clarification that these have most likely stuck with me because I'm not very good at taking these bits of advice! Ha. Okee dokee...here are 3 of the tidbits I have seen as eye openers:

FAT doesn't make you "fat." CALORIES make you "fat." This is important when trying to eat healthy. Things like avocado, olive oil, and peanuts may have a higher fat content than other foods, but they do a lot of good for your health and body. At the end of the day, being healthy is what's important, and those who are trying to lose weight may attempt to cut all fat out of their diets, but we all need fat in our diets! It's all about eating the healthier fats that are available to us :)

Resentment is like a person taking poison and expecting it to kill someone else.  Basically, you are only hurting yourself if you hold on to resentment. I really like this analogy. It can be easy to hold on to negative feelings, but it does harm to you more so than anyone else.

Food should never be used as a reward for anything. This also stuck with me, because I LOVE to reward myself with big meals for all sorts of things. I think it's better instead to reward an accomplishment by celebrating with friends, family, or doing an activity you love like a massage, even a day to do only what you want, if you've accomplished something really great :)

I'm definitely no pro when it comes to always eating healthy or always having a positive attitude, but that's all the more reason to acknowledge these topics.

Veg of the Week

 
...overdue. To be completely honest, I fell off the healthy eating wagon for a while. Now, I still maintained my exclusively vegetarian and vegan eating...I just wasn't eating healthy options. I noticed that when the healthy eating went away, it took my motivation, positive attitude, and energy along with it. And so began the cycle of needing the energy and motivation that healthy eating and exercise give you in order to be able to exercise and eat healthy. Hmpf. Luckily, a few things happened to jolt me back into where I need to be. First...my personal trainer friend who looks fabulous asked me to be in her wedding. This may be a frivolous reason to get back into my healthy habits, but... I want to look good if I'm going to be in a wedding! ;) The other helpful event was that a friend of mine is training for a half marathon. It got me thinking about when I ran one in 2010, and I started exercising. So now I'M signed up for a half marathon, on Oct 21, 2012!
Let me just say my mood is great, and I am getting that amazing internal sense of happiness and motivation back. As hard as it is to keep up with healthy habits, eating healthy and exercising really is essential to live the best life you can. And for me, eating more and more vegan foods makes me feel that much better. It feels like...eating with a purpose. I will look back to this blog post if I start to lose my motivation. 
 
Today I just want to share with you my lunch. I find my craving today peculiar... Although I am the type of person who would be content with summer weather all year- round, my appetite seems to be craving all that is Fall...
 
I couldn't resist a warm bowl of tomato-basil soup and a vegan grilled "cheese" sandwich.
 
The tomato basil soup was just a simple canned soup...200 calories for the whole can. The catch with tomato soup is that if its "Creamy" tomato, it can go up in calories by a lot.
 
For my sandwich, I used 100% whole grain bread, earth balance vegan butter, and Daiya brand vegan "cheese." I put a layer of spinach between the Daiya, because spinach is amazing.
 
 
If you look closely, you'll see the dog salt/pepper shaker.
No post is complete without dogs in it! :)
 
 I love this meal because not only is it good, it's fun to eat!
Perfect for dipping... mmm.
